These Suet treats provide necessary fat to help maintain protien & nutrients during times when grass and insects are scarce such as winter time. Also great in the summer as a cold treat for your chickens.
* Keep in mind, these are treats and should not be a complete substitution for their regular diet.
** NOTE ** When working with warm or hot oils (lard, coconut oil), it can be VERY hot. Use caution to not burn yourself.
Homestead Fresh Suet Cakes
Ingredients
Lard or Coconut Oil 1-1/2 cup
Peanut Butter (optional) 1/2 cup
Meal Worms 1/2 cup
Dried Fruit 1/2 cup
Black Oil Sunflower Seeds 1/2 cup
Pumpkin Seeds (Raw; Unsalted) 1/2 cup
Whole Grains (scratch can be used) 1/2 cup
Cinnamon 1/2 tsp
Garlic Powder 1/2 tsp
Oregano 1/2 tsp
Cayenne Pepper 1/2 tsp
Directions
> In a microwave or double-boiler, melt lard or coconut oil
(does not have to be hot, just liquid enough to pour over, or soft enough to mix)
> Add all dry ingredients to a bowl and mix together
> Mix in Suet (Lard or Coconut Oil)
> Divide evenly into muffin tin
> Place in refrigerator or freezer until solid
> Pop out and give to your birds
Variations
You do not have to use muffin tins, you can utilize anything you choose.
You can even just make one big bowl and have your birds all share together
Instead of mixing the Suet with the dry ingredients, you can put down dry ingredients first and pour Suet over if melted completely.
This recipe is very forgiving... you can change out ingredients, add extra of some items, delete items - your choice.
