The time a bar of soap sits is called “curing”. The longer the cure time, the harder and longer lasting the bar will be. This is why we cure our soaps for 12 weeks in most cases, to create a luxurious, and long lasting bar. However, homemade soaps are a little different than commercial detergent bars - namely glycerin. Glycerin is a bi-product that comes from the chemical reaction when making soap. In commercial bars, this is removed (why? So they can sell it separately for more $$). Homemade soapers don't have the ability to remove this during the creation process. Glycerin is a humectant - which means it attracts moisture. Great for your skin, but not so much for the life of your soap.
Here are a few things you can do to help your homemade soap last a bit longer.
- To use, wet the bar of soap and rub/apply to a washcloth, loofah, or rub directly on skin.
- If you notice any redness or sensitivity to your skin, discontinue use.
- Once you are finished washing, store the bar upright as long as it will stand.
- Try to avoid letting the bar sit in an area that water will pool such as the corner of tub where the shower will “rain” on it.
- If possible, use a soap dish that has air flow underneath.
